Rules for The Golden Lyre Music Competition

The Golden Lyre is a prestigious music competition open to late elementary, middle and high school students. Contestants in vocal category will compete in one of two genres: Musical Theatre and Commercial Music.

General Rules:

  1. Eligibility:
    • Open to 5th grade, middle and high school students.
    • Contestants may choose to participate in one or more categories.
    • Participants must be chosen through the recorded video submission to participate. Please upload your video of one music selection to YouTube and send a link to goldenlyremusic@gmail.com with the student's name, age and category applied for.
    • DEADLINE for video submission and registration is February 28, 2025.
  2. Registration Requirements:
    • A non-refundable registration fee of $20 per first category, and $15 per additional category.
    • Submission of the following:
      • Completed application form.
      • Completed audition video uploaded on YouTube and sent to goldenlyremusic@gmail.com
  3. Audition Time Limit:
    • The total performance time in one category must not exceed 7 minutes for vocal category and not exceed 10 minutes for piano category. The judges reserve the right to stop the audition piece if it exceeds the timeline.
  4. Awards:
    • First Place: Trophy and monetary prize (one per category).
    • Second and Third Places: Medal and tickets to music events/masterclasses (one per category).
    • Participation: All contestants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
    • All winners will perform in Award Ceremony Concert.

Audition Rules:

Musical Theatre Category

  • Perform two contrasting songs memorized (e.g., up-tempo and ballad).
  • Accompaniment options:
    • Backing track. The contestant must email the track 2 weeks prior the competition.
    • Live pianist (provided by the contestant)
  • No rap songs or profanity is allowed.

Commercial Music Category

  • Perform two contrasting song covers memorized (e.g., different styles or moods).
  • Accompaniment options:
    • Backing track. The contestant must email the track 2 weeks prior to the competition. It is contestant's responsibility to make cuts to fit the track within the allowed timeline.
  • A microphone will be provided for the performance.
  • No rap songs or profanity are allowed.

Attire Policy

  • Sunday attire is welcomed.
  • No jeans, sport shoes, sport attire, short skirts are allowed.

Piano Audition Requirements

  • Perform two contrasting pieces from two different time periods memorized (Ex. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionism, Contemporary Classical).
  • Provide a score for the jurors.
